چکیده

Pd catalysts with varying particle size supported on a high-surface-area (600 m2/g) SiO2 were prepared by wet impregnation. The kinetics of vinyl acetate (VA) synthesis at atmospheric pressure was investigated in a fix-bed microreactor. With transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the average diameter of the Pd particles was estimated to be 4.0 ± 0.2 and 2.5 ± 0.1 nm over the reduced Pd(5.0 wt%)/SiO2 and Pd(1.0 wt%)/SiO2 catalysts, respectively; limited sintering of the Pd particles during the reaction was observed for both catalysts. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed primarily metallic Pd crystallites on the reduced catalyst and the formation of Pd carbide (PdCx ) on the reacted catalyst. The Pd kinetics shows that the apparent activation energy increases with a decrease in the Pd particle size, varying from 17.0 kJ/mol over Pd(5.0 wt%)/SiO2 to 39.0 kJ/mol over Pd(1.0 wt%)/SiO2, and the rate of VA formation was significantly enhanced. On the other hand, the reaction orders (i.e., negative order with respect to ethylene and positive order with respect to oxygen) showed very little dependence on the Pd particle size.  2004 Elsevier Inc. Kinetic and spectroscopic studies of vinyl acetate synthesis over Pd(100)

A kinetic study of vinyl acetate (VA) synthesis over a Pd(100) catalyst is described, and the effect of particle-size on this reaction ascertained by comparing the single crystal data with data from supported Pd catalysts (5 wt% Pd/SiO2, dPd=4.2 nm, and 1 wt% Pd/SiO2, dPd=2.5 nm). A negative reaction order with respect to ethylene and a positive order with respect to oxygen were found for the m...

The formation of PdCx over Pd-based catalysts in vapor-phase vinyl acetate synthesis: does a Pd–Au alloy catalyst resist carbide formation?

The formation of Pd carbide (PdCx) during the synthesis of vinyl acetate (VA) was investigated over Pd/SiO2 catalysts with two different Pd particle sizes, as well as over a Pd–Au/SiO2 mixed-metal catalyst. XRD data show that PdCx was produced in the pure Pd catalysts after reaction based on the downshift of the Pd(111) and (200) XRD features. The smaller Pd particles showed greater resistance ...

Synthesis of vinyl acetate on Pd-based catalysts

Vinyl acetate (VA) synthesis over Pd–Au catalysts is an important industrial reaction that has been studied extensively; however, there is no consensus regarding the reaction mechanism, the active site, the key intermediates, and the role of Au. Recent results from our laboratories using a combination of surface science and kinetic methods on technical and model catalytic systems have establish...

A kinetic study of vinyl acetate synthesis over Pd-based catalysts: kinetics of vinyl acetate synthesis over Pd–Au/SiO2 and Pd/SiO2 catalysts

Kinetic studies of vinyl acetate (VA) synthesis were carried out for Pd (1.0 wt%)/SiO2 and Pd (1.0 wt%)–Au (0.5 wt%)/SiO2 catalysts, with highly dispersed metal particles (Pd and Pd–Au) characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy (TEM-EDS). The kinetics of the related CO oxidation reaction were also explored. The kinetics of VA synthesi...

Kinetics of ethylene combustion in the synthesis of vinyl acetate over a Pd/SiO2 catalyst

The kinetic parameters of ethylene combustion in the presence of acetic acid, i.e., during the synthesis of vinyl acetate and in the absence of acetic acid, have been measured in the temperature range 413–453 K over Pd supported on a high surface area SiO2 (600 m 2/g) at pressures ranging from 5.0 to 15.0 kPa of C2H4 and 1.0 to 10.0 kPa of O2. CO2 formation as a function of the partial pressure...
